Stabannon snatch victory with a late two-pointer against O'Mahony's

St Brides 2-11 O'Raghallaighs 0-9

St Brides picked up an important Louth GAA John O'Neill Sand and Gravel Division Two League victory when they recorded a comfortable win over O Raghallaighs in Drogheda on Thursday evening.

Victory sees the Knockbridge men join a group of teams on four points, including O Raghallaighs, as the battle to avoid the drop is beginning to intensify.

The visitors made the perfect start when Padraig Mackin found the back of the net, and that set them up for a dominant first-half display.

With Sennan Hoey and Sean Marry enjoying themselves in front of the posts, the Brides had 1-6 on the scoreboard inside 20 minutes without any reply.

However, the home side turned the tide in dramatic fashion as scores from Kyle McElroy and Ruairi Moore saw them land seven unanswered points in the closing minutes to cut the gap to 1-6 to 0-7.

However, the Knockbridge men composed themselves at the break and regained control early in the second half.

With the Raghs managing to add just one further point to their tally, the Brides sealed victory with a second goal from Paddy Reilly midway through the half.

Kilkerley Emmets 1-13 St Kevins 0-13

Kilkerley Emmets picked up a welcome two points on Friday night when they came out on top in this Division 2 clash against visitors St Kevins.

A second-half goal from substitute Cathal Bellew proved to be the difference in the end as the hosts chalked up a third league win to move further clear of the bottom of the table.

It was St Kevins who started the scoring through Lee Crosbie, only for Cormac Mallon to open his account with a two-pointer, followed by efforts from Micheal Begley and Tadgh McEneaney.

The visitors enjoyed a purple patch as Crosbie and Cian Callan landed two-pointers, along with an effort from Keelan Maher to take the lead. However, Kilkerley finished the half with a Cormac Mallon point to cut the gap to 0-7 to 0-5 at half-time.

The Philipstown men added the first two points of the second half, but the Emmets hit back to level with four unanswered points, before Bellew fired in the all-important goal.

Although St Kevins levelled with the help of a Danny Crosbie two-pointer, it was the hosts who finished the stronger and points from Ronan Deery, Ciaran Bellew and Finnain Crawley saw them over the line.

Oliver Plunketts 1-14 Roche Emmets 2-7

Roche Emmets saw their winning start to the Division 2 season come to an end at Mell on Saturday night, with Adam Smith proving to be the hero for the hosts as he finished with 1-8 to his name.

The visitors had opened the campaign with five consecutive victories, but the Plunketts turned in an impressive display and, in the end, were good value for their four-point win.

It certainly was a welcome win for the Drogheda men as they strive to move away from the foot of the table in what is developing into a very tight battle to avoid the relegation battle.

The game appeared to be going to script as the Faughart side had the better of the first half, and a goal from Daire Reilly helped them take a lead into the break.

Smith capped a fine display by adding a goal, and although DD Reilly raised a green flag at the other end, the Plunketts refused to allow their advantage to slip on a night when Dean Carolan, Niall Murtagh and Tiarnan O’Donovan contributed important points.

Roche battled to the end but were unable to prevent defeat despite points from Alex McArdle, James McDonnell and Liam Dawe.

The O’Mahonys got off to a quick start with Tiarnan Cassidy slotting over a point, Aaron Boyle firing over a two-pointer, and Kayden Fisher with a free kick.

Stabannon then got two goals in quick succession from Robert Callaghan and Harry Butterly to take a 2-1 to 0-4 lead, before Brian McGuirk then put over a great two-pointer just before half-time.

In the second half, Stabannon came out quicker, firing over a two-pointer of their own and a point to put them up by three. Kayden Fisher, Junior Shotayo, Aaron Mackin and Stephen Kilcoyne all got points to bring the game to a draw with 20 minutes left.

Stephen Kilcoyne then put another over the bar after coming off the bench to put the O’Mahonys up by a point, but it was Butterly who had the final say as he landed a two-pointer to snatch victory.

Before the end of the first quarter, Ruairi Kelly added a second to put the hosts firmly in control. Eoghan McEneaney (6) and Arthur Sands pointed to keep the Mitchels in the game, but Kelly added his second goal to send his side in with a 3-5 to 0-8 lead.

The Ballybailie side failed to maintain their challenge in the second period as Young Irelands dominated the remaining 30 minutes.

St Fechins made the brighter start, with Aaron McGlew opening the scoring from play before Ryan Walsh added another, while Glen Emmets got off the mark in the 10th minute with a converted free.

That score sparked the home side into life as they took control on the scoreboard, raising three orange flags in total. Goalkeeper, Eoghan McKeown, converted the first two-pointer from a free, while the other came from play from James Butler.
