National Senior Indoor Championships took place in the National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown over the weekend.

St Peter’s AC Abbie Sheriden competed in the Women’s 3000M race. Abbie is currently enjoying a rich vein of form.

She lined up against the very best in the country, and judging by her performance, that’s exactly where she belongs. The race was a tactical affair with Abbie being part of a lead group from early on.

She managed to finish in fifth place, just a couple of seconds off a podium finish. This was a brilliant performance, clocking another PB for herself, knocking ten seconds off her previous indoor PB, finishing in a time of 9.26.88.

Abbie will now look forward to the outdoor track season with great confidence and ambitions of what she can achieve in the season ahead.

On Friday, the rescheduled Leinster Schools Cross Country Championship finally took place for the third time of asking due to the unprecedented rainfall and ground conditions in the recent weeks.

St Peter’s had three athletes competing for their various schools throughout the programme.

Ella Murphy and Emma McHugh both had strong runs in the minor girls' race as part of the St Vincent’s team, but unfortunately just missed out on going through to the All-Irelands.

The girls' senior race saw the back in form Dearbhla Allen produce an excellent performance on what is an exceptionally tough course.

Dearbhla representing St Mary’s College (Marist) was part of a break away group at the start but showed her intentions early as she pulled away from the rest of the field to take victory with some twelve seconds to spare and claim the Leinster Senior girls title.

Dearbhla however will have a short turnaround due to the rescheduling of the Leinsteirs as the All Irelands will take place this coming Saturday.
