Wolfe Tones are eying a place in Louth GAA Division Two League football after coming through a tight promotion play-off against Nh Fionnbarra on Saturday evening.

The Drogheda men caused a surprise when they accounted for the strongly fancied Barrs with goals from Joe Comiskey and Garrett Cooney helping them to an impressive win.

As a result, the Junior Champions will be hoping to continue a memorable 12 months for the club by securing their place in the higher grade next year.

Following their facile win over Lannleire in the semi-final, the Barrs came into the game in a confident mood, but it soon became clear that they were facing a much more difficult challenge on this occasion.

It was Comiskey who scored the first goal of the game to put his side in a very healthy 1-7 to 0-4 lead going into the break.

The Ballygassan side did improve in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to deny the Tones as they added a second when Garrett Cooney’s long-range effort found its way to the net, helping the Drogheda men to hold out for a famous win.

Wolfe Tones: Johnny Lynch; Davy Bolger, Danny Byrne, Alan Fanning; Eoghan Clinton, Liam Gaffney, Seán McQuail; Mark Healy, Sam Kelly; Garrett Cooney 1-0, Taidgh Rock, Joe Comiskey 1-3; Eoghan Brennan 0-3, Chris Cudden 0-2, Alan Wilton.

Subs: Patrick Fanning for E Clinton, Niall Smith for A Wilton.
