St Peter’s Athletes at the Dromiskin 5K.
The village of Dromiskin was a hive of activity on Saturday evening. The annual Dromiskin 5K took place in what has become one of the biggest races on the local circuit.
There was a total of 657 finishers which is the highest amount yet. The men's race was a keenly contested affair with all three men on the podium running under 15 minutes.
The winner was Juan Ignacio Pena from Raheny Shamrocks in a time of 14.45, 2nd place was Gavin Curtain from Donore Harriers in a time of 14.55 and in third was Anthony O’Brien in a time of 14.58.
The first U20 man was Ace AC athlete Danny Nugent in a very impressive time of 15.20. Barry Meegan took the over 40’s victory in a time of 17.00 mins.
Thomas Carson was the first in the over 50 category in a time of 17.49 with local legend Jim Gonnelly coming 2nd. Bohermeen Athlete David O’Connell was the first over 60 followed by St Peter’s AC Andrew Rogers.
The women’s race was also of the highest quality with the first five under 18 mins, two time Olympian Michelle Finn from Leavele AC took the title in a blistering time of 16.05 breaking her own course record, 2nd place in the senior women’s was St Peter’s AC athlete Dearbhla Allen in a new PB time of 17.26, 3rd place was Dunleer AC athlete Neasa Reilly in a time of 17.39 closely followed by her side kick Kelly Breen in a time of 17.44, Abbie Sheriden from the host club also dipped in under the 18 Mins coming home in a time of 17.52.
The junior women’s race was an Ace AC affair with Eimear and Chloe Cooney finishing 1st and 2nd respectively. The over 40 category saw Dunleer duo Karen Costello come in in first place with Nicola Welsh taking second.
The first over woman was Anita Bolton from North East Runners with Ardee AC Tracey Gillespie taking 2nd. The 1st over 60 woman was Mary Mackin from Dromore AC with Patrica Brown from Newry City Runners taking 2nd.
Both the men’s and women's team prizes were won by Dunleer AC. Afterwards, athletes and supporters enjoyed a fantastic spread of homemade baking and sandwiches. The event was a huge success with the whole community of Dromiskin and Darver getting behind it.
