'Government decision should keep door open to full inquiry'

Louth based Senator Alison Comyn, has said she hopes any decision made by Government will allow progress towards a full statutory inquiry for the victims of Michael Shine.

Speaking ahead of a memorandum due before Cabinet, Senator Comyn said that victims need closure, and that a full inquiry can deliver the answers they have waited for.

“A full statutory inquiry would be a meaningful step toward giving victims the truth they deserve,” she said.

The Fianna Fáil senator, who said she has worked for almost fifteen years with victims of Michael Shine during her career as a journalist, said she had witnessed first-hand the trauma and loss experienced by survivors and their families.

She said these men continue to live with the impact of what was done to them and are still waiting for the answers that only a comprehensive process can provide.

“The actions of this vile man shattered so many lives,” Senator Comyn said. “His abuse left a lasting mark on families and on our community.”

She added that too many questions remain unanswered and too many voices have yet to be fully heard. “The victims want to understand how this abuse was allowed to continue for so long,” she said. “They are seeking peace of mind, but that can only come through truth and accountability.”

Senator Comyn concluded by saying that a full statutory inquiry would be an important step towards healing for the victims and their families.

“I sincerely hope that whatever decision is made now will leave the way open for a full statutory inquiry,” she said.
