The Sinn Fein President said that
“The decision of the government to force individual tenants, under the threat of homelessness, into negotiations on rents with landlords that for many is unwinnable, is causing untold misery and upheaval for many families across the state.
“Instead of forcing individual households to negotiate with landlords the Department of Social Protection should undertake this task. My office, and the offices of other TD’s, are dealing with families who are facing the distressing prospect of having to move from their homes, from their areas and even to move their children from one school to another as a result of this heavy handed decision. These households already live in accommodation that is at the bottom of the price scale so where do they go if their landlord refuses to reduce rents? To the Homeless services? These cannot cope with the demands currently on them.”
“Between Rent Supplement, the Rental Accommodation Scheme and leasing arrangements private landlords are being subsidised by the tax payer to the tune of well over half a billion euro.
