The Ardee Business and Traders Association are holding a bonanza weekend to celebrate the success of the free parking in town.
“It starts this Friday, 15 August and there will be bargains and prizes galore in all the shops,” said John Caffrey, chairman of the traders. “There will be a barbeque for all children along with face painting and other activities at the Fair Green at 7pm on Friday.
“The free parking has been a great success. It suits the way people want to shop in the town.
“People can come into Ardee and shop at their ease.
“And business is really picking up. It’s a real success story and we want to mark that with this special promotion centred round the fifteenth.”
Ardee traders have already started work on their Christmas plan, such is the mood of optimism in the town.
“We are looking at brochures,” said John, “and we hope to invest in more festive lights.
“The traders have always supplied the Christmas lights and this year we hope to make it even brighter and better.”
The free parking was introduced last spring.
Under the new regulations, shoppers can park their vehicle for two hours before having to move it to a different location.
The pay-parking system was one of the cheapest in the country, but it was never a success and after intense lobbying by the traders, it was finally scrapped last March.
