Dundalk man Eric Begg has been nominated for a Calor Community Champion Award. Eric has serious visual impairment and has been a member of Fighting Blindness for the past nine years.
The 64 year old has organised fundraising events and raised awareness of the work of Fighting Blindness across the country as well as raising tens of thousands of euros of much-needed funds.
“A friend of mine got me involved in Fighting Blindness about 10 years ago,” said Eric. “I didn’t know much about RP or what it was but I wanted to do what I could to help people get some sort of vision back.
In my teens and early twenties, I started having difficulty seeing at night. This got worse and after many consultations, I was diagnosed with the retinal degenerative condition retinitis pigmentosa (RP).
“I joined Fighting Blindness because I want to help raise funds for treatments and cures for blindness.
I don’t care what I have to do as long as it works and helps to find a breakthrough.
“It’s probably too late to find something to help me now but, as long as there is breath in my body, I’ll keep working until they find something that can help younger people from losing their sight.”
