A local woman appeared on our TV screens last week in a bid to raise much needed funds for the Jack and Jill Foundation.
Anne Reilly, from Kilcurry, is the liaison nurse for the supportive foundation and helps families from Co. Louth, Meath, Monaghan, Dublin, Donegal and many other locations in their time of need.
The foundation has launched a national appeal to help it raise an urgent €e400,000 shortfall in funds required to run its service to the end of the year.
The charity, which provides intensive home nursing care, funding and support to the families of children under four years old with brain damage, has been severely hit by the recession and a reduction in its HSE grant.
The foundation has decided to hit the small screen, making a heart-touching advert that will be screened on Irish television.
Speaking to the Dundalk Democrat this week, Anne Reilly, who features in the clip said “We are in desperate need of funds, that is an understatement. I’ve been with Jack and Jill for nine years and the referrals is increasing every year, but the funds come in has decreaed. We are in dire straits.”
The clip features the story of the Brigid Flanagan and her three-year old son Richard, who requires 24-hour-a-day care. This week, Anne tells her story in the clip.
“I love what I do, we give hope to families. All money raised will go directly to the charity. Sick children have a right to be at home, but still in 2012 the Government doesn’t provide this help,” said Anne.
“It is an overwhelming experience for families, we come in and reassure them with our support services. We find nurses and we give the family confidence. Parents are often exhausted supporting their child’s needs, so the help we can give them is like gold dust.
“We are relying on the public to help with this campaign, so all they need to do is text the words “We Care ” to 57034 to donate €5,” Anne added.
Meanwhile, Anne is set to appear on the Brendan O’Connor show in the near future to raise awareness about the campaign.
Jack & Jill currently caters for children up to the age of four and funds up to 64 hours home nursing care per month for families.
Currently there is no dedicated budget within the HSE for home nursing care for children with life limiting conditions.
If you wish to donate €5 to the charity text the words “We Care ” to 57034.
