LOUTH Fianna Fail TD Seamus Kirk has welcomed his appointment to the Horticulture and Rural Affairs portfolio on the party’s front bench.
Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin announced the portfolios to be occupied by his party’s TDs on Wednesday, April 13.
Mr Kirk - a Knockbridge man with a background in farming was appointed to the Horticulture and Rural Affairs portfolio.
“I am happy with the role. I am happy with any role at this point. It’s an important position. I was Minister of State for Horticulture in the late 1980s,” said Mr Kirk.
“The rural development is a new dimension. I think there is great opportunity for developing rural communities on a co-ordinated basis.”
Mr Kirk added that he and his party colleagues are adjusting to the new political reality in Leinster House after the recent general election saw the FF party reduced to just 20 sitting members.
“It’s a different house. The Government has a huge majority and there are a significant number of Independents in opposition.”
Mr Martin is taking responsibility for the North, while Brian Lenihan remains as Finance spokesperson, assisted by Michael McGrath, who is spokesperson on Public Expenditure and Financial Sector Reform. Sean Fleming is spokesperson on Public Sector Reform. Three former Cabinet members also get portfolios.
