TRIBUTES were paid over Easter to Fr Dick Delahunty, Rector of St Joseph’s Redemptorist Community in Dundalk and Administrator of St Joseph’s Parish Dundalk.
The Redemptorist Community and the wider community of the people of Dundalk have wished Fr Delahunty “bon voyage and God’s blessings on his work”.
A native of Mooncoin in Kilkenny, Fr Delahunty will now return to Brazil where he spent all of 30 years as a missionary.
“I’m a Brazilian citizen,” Fr Delahunty said, “so I’ll be returning to Brazil for six months.
“There are 30 Irish Redemptorists working there, in the north-east and mid-west.
“I’ll be sad to leave Dundalk. I’ve met some wonderful people and truly enjoyed my six years here. It’s a part of the country I didn’t previously know.”
He said the annual solemn novena in honour of St Gerard Majella at the Redemptorist is still the major event of the year and still relevant to the lives of many Dundalk people.
“It draws both young and old,” Fr Delahunty said, “and still very well attended.”
As administrator he set up baptismal classes, prayer groups, Bible study groups, and developed more lay involvement in the parish.
He brought new life to the annual St Gerard novena and will be fondly remembered for his dedication to the sick and housebound of the parish.
Fr Michael Cusack has been appointed the new Rector at St Joseph’s.
