LOCAL man Maurice McMahon has organised a head shave and leg waxing night in Felda on Monday October 3 as part of the Relay for Life event, which takes place the following weekend.
The Wolfe Tone Terrace man has been purposely letting his hair grow in the build-up to the event – which gets under way at 7pm – and will have it shaved off on the night.
Maurice, who is a trainer in Felda, has also roped in a number of friends to help him raise money for cancer research.
The Dundalk Democrat’s advertising manager Mark Matthews will be getting his legs waxed on the night, as well as Conor Byrne and Robert Kinahan while Seamus Loughran will be joining Maurice in getting his head shaved.
Speaking about his reason for running the event, Maurice said: “As with most people, cancer has affected my family.
“My mam died aged 40 from cancer. It left a massive hole in our lives, especially my dad, my two sisters – who were only nine and six – and also for myself.
“I have witnessed first-hand the effects cancer has on the whole circle of family and friends. It is a very difficult time full of worry and anxiety, not knowing what is going to happen but also full of hope that it can be beaten.
“Felda Fit Squad have entered a team into the Relay for Life event in Dundalk and as part of this we hope to raise funds through the head shave and leg waxing night.”
Maurice and his Felda team have already raised over e700 for the event through a cake sale and said he was delighted to be involved with the Relay For Life event, which takes place in Xerox on October 8 and 9.
“The Relay For Life is such a wonderful event,” he said.
“It allows us to bring all our emotions together in one amazing event. During the 24 hours you get to remember those who have passed away or are still fighting, celebrate those who have won the battle and fight back by educating people, making them aware and also by raising funds to help the fight.”
There will be 32 teams at the Relay For Life event with each team having undertaken to raise funds and awareness about cancer. During the event each team will have a stall where they will have fun and games and raffles.
The event gets underway at 6pm on Saturday October 8 with a Survivor’s Lap and later in the evening there is the Candle of Hope ceremony where candles are placed around the circuit and the lights are dimmed.
On Monday night, Felda spa will be carrying out the leg waxing while the headshave will be done by Tres Belle hairdressers. Wax strips can also be bought as an additional fundraiser. The event gets underway at 7pm.
