Louth County Council have said it hopes to deliver Dundalk's first cost-rental homes in 2026.
It was recently announced that a further 23 cost-rental homes would be available in Drogheda by approved housing body (AHB) Clúid.
Cost rental homes are designed for people who do not qualify for social housing or other supports like the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) but still struggle to rent in the private market.
The homes have their rents set at a minimum level of 25 per cent below the local market rents. The rents are set to cover the cost of construction, maintenance, and operation of the development.
Green Party councillor for Dundalk Marianne Butler raised the issue at January's meeting of Louth County Council.
Cllr Butler asked the council for an update on when Dundalk might see a cost-rental development in the town.
She joked that "Drogheda gets everything" with the latest batch of houses and said "we're still waiting for one in Dundalk".

Ger Murphy, Director of Services for Housing and Cultural Delivery with Louth County Council said it welcomes the scheme in Drogheda but acknowledged there is none in Dundalk.
Mr Murphy confirmed Louth County Council are currently working on a number of schemes, with one in particular, it hopes will be delivered in 2026.
He said there are several complexities in delivering cost-rental accommodation.
"The issue with cost-rental is you're trying to make sure costs stack up so we have the affordability for prospective tenants."
Mr Murphy concluded that Louth County Council are "optimistic" cost-rental homes will come to Dundalk in 2026 and said he would keep councillors informed on the matter.
Alongside the latest development of 23 cost-rental homes in Tullybrook in Drogheda, there are also two other developments in the town with 34 and 49 cost-rental homes respectively both provided by AHB Tuath Housing.
