Louth County Council has opened applications for the 2026 Commercial Rates Waiver Scheme.

The scheme is aimed at new businesses by supporting them in tackling  long-term vacant commercial properties.

Under the scheme, eligible business that take over a premises which has been vacant for more than 12 months will benefit from savings on commercial rates over three years.

The scheme uses a sliding-scale waiver with successful applicants receiving a 100 per cent waiver in the first year, 50 per cent in the second year and 25 per cent in the final year.

After the third year, the business will be liable for the full commercial rates due on the premises.

Cllr Seán Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council said the scheme will help transform vacant spaces into vibrant places that power the local economy.

"If you’ve been thinking about starting a new business, now is the perfect time. This scheme offers real financial support to help you get started and succeed while also revitalising vacant properties in Louth’s towns,” he said.

Thomas McEvoy, Director of Service and Deputy Chief Executive with Louth County Council said for many, cost is the biggest hurdle for many startups.

"This waiver removes a major barrier and gives businesses the breathing space they need to grow. It’s a practical, targeted support that benefits both entrepreneurs and the wider community by encouraging the use of long-term vacant units in our town centres," he said.
