International humanitarian response agency, GOAL, says it was delighted to bring together TDs from all political persuasions, including from Louth, on Tuesday 9 December at Dublin’s historic Merrion Square, just a stone’s throw from their Leinster House workplace, for the inaugural Leinster House GOAL Mile in aid of GOAL.

Since its foundation over four decades ago, GOAL Mile, proudly supported by AIB, has grown to become one of Ireland’s most loved festive traditions, with the event helping to raise critical funds for GOAL’s life-saving humanitarian work around the world with vulnerable communities affected by relentless conflict, the devastating effects of climate change and resulting mass displacement.

With thousands of people set to take part again this year, Sinn Féin TD for the Louth constituency Ruairí Ó Murchú joined party colleagues Darren O’Rourke, Pa Daly and John Brady, and other occupants of Leinster House, including: Labour leader Ivana Bacik of Dublin Bay South, her party colleagues Ciarán Ahern, Conor Sheehan and Nessa Cosgrove, Fine Gael’s Neale Richmond, Brian Brennan and James Geoghegan, Fianna Fáil’s Alison Comyn and Dublin North West’s Rory Hearne of the Social Democrats, as politicians from across the board came together for a GOAL Mile for the very first time.

Speaking at the event, Nafisa Brennan, Senior Fundraising Manager with GOAL, said: “We are delighted to put together the inaugural Leinster House GOAL Mile and even more ecstatic to see the number of politicians who took time out from their busy schedules to run or walk a mile around these beautiful surroundings here in the centre of Dublin.

“With representation from all the parties and each corner of Ireland, we hope that this event will encourage everyone to come out and find their local GOAL Mile this Christmas and join in on what is always such a fun, family-friendly event.

Ruairí Ó Murchú added: “There are over 200 GOAL Mile locations across the country this Christmas season, including nine in Co. Louth. I encourage everyone to find their local GOAL Mile at GOALMile.org.”
