Back in 2011, a handful of young people walked through the doors of M.A.D Youth Theatre in Dundalk with big imaginations and a love for drama. Fourteen years later, M.A.D is an award-winning youth theatre, recognised for its work in the arts and in the community, and on 10 September from 5–7pm is holding its 15th Open Day, at M.A.D Youth Theatre, Earl Street (opposite Rock Salt Café), and is inviting the public along.
The theatre group is aimed at post-primary aged young people, aged 12–18. M.A.D. (Making Alternative Drama) is seen as a place to try something new, grow in confidence, make friends, and discover the power of creativity. No experience needed, just curiosity.
This past year has been a special one. M.A.D. premiered Salt Mountain by Carmel Winters; partnered with TRY Theatre (Rijeka, Croatia) for its Erasmus+ exchange Theatre Without Borders; created living tableaux for Cruinniú na nÓg’s Eternal Frame; attended Youth Theatre Ireland’s national festival in Kilkenny; joined the Young Critics programme; ran residentials, its Little Drama Festival; launched a youth filmmaking strand; and celebrated the ever-colourful MAD Couture Project.
But the best way to understand M.A.D is to hear from the young people: “I came in nervous, but after the first workshop I felt like I’d found my second family", said one 14 year old who joined. Another, aged 16, said, “M.A.D gave me the confidence to use my voice, not just on stage but in life." Another, aged 17, said, “it’s the place I can be myself. I’ve made friends for life here.”
M.A.D welcomes young people from all walks of the diverse community to join. It said that there is so much to take part in including workshops, performances, festivals, film, trips, and more. Spaces are limited, so early registration is encouraged. Head along, bring a friend, and see what it is all about. To register contact info@madyouththeatre.com or text “openday 2025” to 087 403 5721.
