De La Salle College held a coffee morning for parents last Wednesday morning, as part of the school's celebration of Autism Acceptance Week. Katy Lynch, a teacher and autism co-ordinator at the De La Salle, told the Dundalk Democrat a little about the activities during Autism Acceptance Week.

The coffee morning on Wednesday saw Trish and Jacinta from Autism Support Louth visit the school to give parents an informative talk. Cllr Maeve Yore who has been very supportive of the work done by the De La Salle for those with additional needs, including giving the school some funding in January to go towards trips and excursions for the boys in the autism class, was also there. Cllr Yore was presented with a bouquet of flowers by the pupils in appreciation of the work and support she has given. A tour was given of the school's autism class, Le Chéile (Together).

Le Chéile was opened in September 2023, taking in four pupils. Then in September 2024, four more boys were taken in and the school got its modular unit. “It's a fabulous space”, Katy explained, “it's been such a game changer, the boys really love it. The boys love coming to school, they do go out to some mainstream classes as well and we give some of the mainstream students opportunities to come over to us as well. It's really welcomed by the school.”

On Thursday, the school held a a sponsored walk and a quiz. The annual sponsored walk was held in aid of two charities, My Canine Companion and the Maria Goretti Foundation. The staff and students enjoyed the 5km walk through Ice House Hill in the sunshine. The school quiz that afternoon brought students together for some friendly competition, with Fifth Year Mentors teaming up with their First Year PC classes for a fun Easter Quiz in the school gym.

Finally, on Friday, it was Blue Day at the De La Salle, with staff wearing blue to mark the day, with the Social Committee organising coffee and cupcakes for everyone as an Easter treat.
