DkIT team win the ‘Great Agri-Food Debate’

DkIT joined agri-food students from across Ireland and the UK for the 7th Annual ‘Great Agri-Food Debate’.

This was an exciting and intense virtual event for DkIT’s Debate Team, made up of BSc (Hons) in Agriculture students.

The team consisted of: Ciara Brady (Captain) – Milltown, Co Cavan, Richard Gilsenan – Moynalty, Co. Meath, Claire Bolger – Phillipstown, Co. Louth, Sarah Armstrong – Cornafean, Co. Cavan, Hannah Grimes – Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, Caoimhe Sheridan – Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan

DkIT won their debate against MTU with the topic ‘Red meat is essential as part of a nutritionally balanced diet’. Sarah Armstrong was also voted as Best Speaker in that debate.

Sustainability and its role in the future of the agri-food industry was the main focus in the competition, which is a joint initiative by Dawn Meats and McDonald’s. Eight colleges and universities debated virtually across three days.

Alongside DkIT, agriculture and agri-food students from UCD, UL, CAFRE, Waterford Institute of Technology, MTU joined English teams from Loughborough University and Progressive Young Farmers, with the overall winner’s trophy awarded to WIT for 2022.
