Gardaí and customs officers have raided an illegal cigarette production factory in Jenkinstown in north Louth today.
In total eleven people, aged between their 20s and 50s, have been arrested, with all believed to be from Eastern Europe.
According to RTE it is the first time such a facility has been discovered in Ireland. Members of the Garda Armed Support Unit took part in the operation along with Revenue officials.
Reports state that up to 25 million illegal cigarettes were found and 40 tonnes of tobacco. Also on the site were living quarters.
The facility is being labelled a "commercial illicit cigarette production plant" by officials.
Revenue officials state that the loss to the Exchequer should the cigarettes have been sold would have been €12m.
