LOUTH Fine Gael TD Fergus O'Dowd has said that the breakthrough in the Brexit negotiations will see no return to the borders of the past in Co Louth.

Mr O’Dowd offered his sincere thanks to everyone involved in getting this deal over the line.

“This deal ensures a bright future for Louth. For so long our county was constrained by a hard border that hindered our prosperity," he said.

“Since the Good Friday Agreement our county has prospered from increased trade and economic prosperity. This deal will mean that Louth will continue to prosper.

“The vast majority of people on this island recognise the importance of maintaining the free movement of people and goods on our island."

He added: “Protecting this has been the Government’s main aim since the UK votes to leave the European Union. It is important to remember everyone involved in achieving this win.

"Our Government and the EU negotiating team are rightfully receiving praise for this hard work. I would like to thank everyone involved in our tremendous diplomatic efforts across Europe and the world.

Mr O'Dowd concluded: "All the political parties have rowed in behind the Government at this monumentally important time for our country and that too needs to be recognised.

“The Good Friday Agreement is the framework for peace and prosperity on this island. I am delighted that it will be protected. This is a good day for our island and the border region in particular."
