Carlingford Tidy Towns take part in coast clean-up

CARLINGFORD Tidy Towns, proud members of the Clean Coasts Group, recently took part in the Coca Cola Clean Coasts Week carrying out a joint beach clean with ‘Love your Lough’, the Carlingford Oyster Company and The Oystermen.

“We recently received our #2minutebeachclean board from Clean Coasts, kindly delivered by Louth County Council. It’s a simple idea to reduce marine litter, preventing pollution and ingestion by marine life. If you are a beach lover we ask you use this opportunity to help. All you have to do is spend 2 minutes collecting litter on the beach (use litter picker and bags provided at the board)’.

“Take a photo of the litter you find and post the snaps on Instagram/twitter/facebook with hashtags #2minutebeachclean and #cleancoasts. Then put your litter in a bin, and return the litter picker to the board”.

“The Carlingford Marina have been so good to look after the board which needs to be taken out each day and put away at night time. Carlingford’s board is currently located at the start of the Greenway at Carlingford Marina. This provides access to the beaches between Carlingford and Omeath. It hopes to encourage the general public to take things into their own hands when it comes to cleaning beaches’.

Louth county council commented,

‘Louth County Council are delighted to be part of the #2minutebeachclean programme for 2016 which is a fantastic initiative from An Táisce. The idea is simple and effective with beachgoers being asked to pick up litter for two minutes when they visit our beaches. Every piece of litter removed from the beach is a piece of litter that won’t pollute our coastlines and oceans.

We are delighted with the takeup of the campaign with six local groups getting involved throughout the county from Clogherhead to Carlingford. Many of these groups are already dedicated to keeping their towns and villages litter free and deserve great credit for extending their campaigns to their local beaches.’

Carlingford Marina commented,

‘We are thrilled to get involved in the 2 Minute Beach Clean project. These stands are very effective at facilitating people who already have a proactive approach to reducing the amount of litter on our shores. And with any luck, the ease at which people can participate will encourage even more to do the same’.

“Having clean beaches is something that we can all benefit from, and we believe it is something we should all be working towards. With the 2 Minute Beach Clean, you may feel you're doing very little in the large scheme of things - but if you've taken away more rubbish than you have left behind, you're helping to achieve that goal. If everyone were to do the same, we'd have clean beaches in no time’
