People in Louth have been encouraged to make use the county's library services, which were described as "incredible" at February's meeting of Louth County Council.

The service was highlighted by Sinn Féín councillor for Dundalk South Kevin Meenan who also encouraged his fellow councillors to make use of the service.

He said councillors should lead by example and visit one of the county's five libraries, in Dundalk, Carlingford, Ardee, Drogheda and Dunleer.

Cllr Meenan said there is a "stigma" around going to the library which can put people off, and said there is a perception that libraries were "never really there for people.

Cllr Seán Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council said he had recently visited the Dundalk Library and said he was "amazed" at the level of services across the county.

He described the service as "incredible" and said it is a testament to team behind the scenes.

Fine Gael councillor for Drogheda Anne Marie Ford, who is also a school principal, said children really enjoy it when the library van delivers books to the school.

She asked if once a year, someone from the library service could give a talk to the children in an effort to "highlight what the library has".

She added that the best way to get people into the library was by "persuading" children to come.

Louth County Council is currently holding a public consultation on the future of libraries in the county.

Amanda Branigan, County Librarian and Head of Cultural Services at Louth County Council, previously said: “Our new, five-year Library Development Programme is all about creating spaces, services, and opportunities that truly meet the needs of people in Louth.

“Libraries are at the heart of our communities, and this is a chance for the public to tell us what matters most - whether it’s new technology, community events, or somewhere to read, learn and be creative.

“We would encourage everyone to get involved, have their say and help us build a library service for everyone.”

The online consultation runs until 20th March. Further information is available from each of the five Louth County Council libraries or online.
