Louth students Priscilla Ngandu and Lauren Geraghty were presented with scholarship awards by Dublin City University at a ceremony to celebrate memorial and endowed scholarships.

In total, 51 students received awards named in honour of individuals and organisations who have played a leading role in the life of Dublin City University and in wider Irish society.

Priscilla Ngandu from Dundalk, a past pupil of Coláiste Chu Chulainn who is studying a Master in Political Communication at Dublin City University was awarded The TJ O’Driscoll Memorial Scholarship.

Dr TJ (Tim) O’Driscoll, was a former Director General of Bord Fáilte, the Irish Tourist Board (1956 – 1971), and was the first Chairman of Córas Tráchtála. Dr O’Driscoll, who died in 1998 at the age of 90, made an extraordinary contribution to the development of the modern Irish State. This scholarship is supported by the daa.

Lauren Geraghty from Drogheda, a former student of Ballymakenny College who is currently completing a degree in Science and Health at Dublin City University, was presented with the ICON Access Scholarship.

The ICON Access Scholarships at DCU were created by leading clinical research organisation ICON plc in 2022 to provide increased opportunities for underrepresented groups to study STEM-related courses through the DCU Access Programme.

Speaking at the event, Declan Raftery of DCU Educational Trust commented: “Memorial and endowed scholarships make an enduring contribution to the University’s mission to transform lives and societies.

By creating opportunities for doctoral research that tackles some of the world’s most pressing challenges, and opening a door for talented students to excel, these scholarships are supporting more DCU students to make their mark on the world.

“We are proud to honour those who created these scholarships, and our friends and loved ones who are remembered through them.”

The 51 scholarship recipients were selected based on different criteria, depending on the wishes of those who created the scholarship.

These include undergraduate students supported by DCU’s Access Programme, postgraduate students in the fields of cancer research, education, law and journalism, and students with outstanding sporting and academic achievements.
