Census 2022: Louth sees fall in number of Catholics and rise in those of no religion

The number of Catholics in the Louth County Council area has fallen significantly, while the number of people who said they are of no religion has increased, according to small area data from Census 2022, released this week by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

100,502 or 72% of the population of 139,703 in Louth said they were Catholic in Census 2022. This compares to 82% of the population of Louth in Census 2016, when 105,186 out of 128,884 said they were Catholic.

The number of people who said they have no religion in Louth in 2022 was 16,794 or 12%. This compares to 9,747 or 8% of the population in 2016.

12,799 or 9% said they were of an other religion in Louth, while 9,608 people did not state whether or not they were part of a religion.

This compares to 10,775 or 8% who were of another religion in Louth in 2016, and 3,176 or just 3% of people in 2016 did not state whether they were part of a religion.
