Huge fall in fraud crimes in Louth

The number of Fraud, Deception and Related offences recorded in the Louth Garda Division have seen a huge fall, according to the latest crime figures released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

According to the CSO release, Recorded Crime Q1 2023, 280 Fraud, Deception and Related offences were recorded in Louth in the year to the end of the first quarter (Q1) of 2023. This is down from 499 offences recorded a year earlier and represents a fall of 43.9%.

55 offences were recorded in Q1 2023, down from 73 in Q4 2022 and down from 94 in Q1 2022.

The fall in these type of offences has happened across the state. Nationally, crime incidents involving Fraud, Deception & Related offences were down 41% to 10,366 over the same period mostly due, the CSO says, to a fall in incidents of unauthorised transactions and attempts to obtain personal or banking information online or by phone.

Recorded Crime statistics continue to be categorised as Statistics Under Reservation, which means that the quality of these statistics do not meet the standards required of official statistics published by the CSO.
