Club Professional at Dundalk Golf Club Leslie Walker presents his prize to the winner Sean Og Cairns
A birdie on the last proved decisive as Sean Og Cairns edged out Brian Crombie by the narrowest of margins to win Leslie Walker’s Professional’s Prize which was played over the weekend of June 10 and 11.
Cairns (15) and Crombie (25) finished tied on 67 nett and it needed two stages of countback to divide first and second, with Cairns having the better back six holes by 0.7 of a shot. The 18th was the key hole, as Cairns birdied it while Crombie had a double bogey six.
Cairns went out in 33 nett after pars at the first, second, sixth and eighth and had three more pars on the way back at the 11th, 16th and 17th before that brilliant finish on 18.
Birdies were also a feature of Joseph Laverty’s round as he shot a level par 72 to win the Gross Prize. His round included four birdies as well as an eagle three at the par five 10th.
Michael Gallagher (16) with 72 nett won the Veteran’s Prize while the Division prizes went to Dillion Greene (7), Aaron Hoey (12) and Ciaran McAteer (21).
In the Wednesday Stableford, Conor Murphy (23) shot an impressive 43pts to win the Deluxe Bathrooms Open Singles Stableford competition.
His round included two four-point pars and six three-point pars as he finished three points clear of second place Bernard Laverty (9). Colin Roche with 33pts claimed the day’s best gross score.
There were mixed fortunes for the Club on the inter-club scene. The Junior Cup team beat Castleknock, but there were defeats for the Senior Cup team against Baltray and the Boys Foursomes team against Clontarf.

DUNDALK LADIES
The annual 4 Lady Charity team event, in aid of Hospice Homecare, was played on Saturday June 10 and Tuesday June 13.
This is one of the most popular competitions of the golfing season, with all proceeds going towards North Louth Hospice Homecare. The competition was once again very kindly sponsored by Paula Bishoff and Catherine McElligott of The Hair Shop.
30 teams competed this year, with very high scores returned. The winning team of Noeleen Gernon, Mary Laverty, Criona O’Reilly and Nicola Fee returned a superb score of 95 points.
They clinched victory by one point from Sally McDonnell, Gillian McDonnell, Liz O’Neill and Bernie O’Neill, who in turn claimed the runner-up spot on countback. In third place were Anna Rowland, Katie Rowland, Una Connolly and Marcella Carr.
Maura O’Callaghan, Director of the North Louth Branch, was delighted with the support again in 2023. North Louth Hospice was established almost 30 years ago and continues to do trojan work in supporting those diagnosed with cancer and their families.
Some of the many services provided by the Hospice include assisting patients with transport to hospital appointments, provision of specialist Homecare Services, Home Help Support and Family Support.
Lady Captain Briege Renaghan spoke of the commitment of the members of Dundalk Golf Club to this most worthy cause and thanked all those who had helped organise the event and all who had played.
The final sum raised was in excess of €7,000. The generosity of the ladies and gents of Dundalk Golf Club is very much appreciated by all involved. Many thanks again to the very generous sponsorship of The Hair Shop.
