Legends of Louth Festival returns this weekend

The second Legends of Louth Festival takes place this Saturday, 27th May 2023 at Market Square Dundalk. 

It is a Family Fun, accessible event with a full programme to showcase and promote our musical and sporting talent and to encourage tourists to explore our county and our heritage.  

Jock McArdle, Legends of Louth Chairperson says:

“We are building on the success of our inaugural Legends of Louth Festival in 2019 and this is a festival like no other and it’s a celebration of being ‘Louth and Proud’ of our cultural history with something for everyone. 

“You can try your hurling skills with our Poc in the Hounds, or take part in Cuchulainn’s 5k or 2k Family Fun Run or Walk around local landmarks kindly organised by Brenda Hill of Dundalk Park Run, or witness the skills of hurling at the Hurling Blitz kindly organised by Josie Maguire from Naomh Moninne HC.”

The fantastic Carlingford Pipe Band will be opening the festival with street entertainment including The Grannies Bealtaine National Festival Programme and musical /dancing entertainment organised by the talented Dáithí Kearney which will include Scoil-Rince Mona Ní Rodaigh, the Oriel Traditional Orchestra, A Louth Lilt, Scoraíocht Lann Léire and Cú Chulainn CCE.

The Legends of Louth Festival includes Guided Tours - all of which have to be pre booked as numbers are limited.

Events include:

  • A Military History Tour of Aiken Barracks - register at 10.45am Point Rd entrance - Tour starts 11am 
    County Museum Tour - Jocelyn St Dlk at 11am - to book ring 0429392999
  • Seek Mural Walking Tour of Dundalk- starts at 11.30am Dundalk Tourist Office - to book ring 04293352111
  • Evening schedule will take place in the County Museum - Admission €10 - between 7-9pm with “I Kavanagh” a celebration of the life and works of Patrick Kavanagh complied and performed by locally born Noel McGee and a ‘Talk on Wildlife and Fauna in the Cooley Mountains’ by Derek Watters 
  • Other events organised over the 27th & 28th May include the An Táin International Hill Walking Festival, where you can walk in the footsteps of Cuchulain in the Cooley Mountains. Registration on both days at Dundalk Tourist Office between 8-9am.
  • On Sun 28th May the Mount Avenue Historical Archaeology Walk takes place starting at 2pm outside the Redeemer Church Grounds where you will visit Louth Wall, see standing stones, Cuchulainn’s grave, 5000 year old rock art and much more - hiking boots recommended and walk duration is 3.5hrs 


Legends of Louth Committee wants to acknowledge and thank all the help they have received from all the organisers, Martin & Fiona in Dlk BID’s, Sineád in Tourist Office, Paul in An Táin Arts Centre, all sponsors, Louth Volunteer Centre, PayPal and their volunteers, Louth Civil Defence, the local community policing Gardai.

The Committee hope people from all over Louth will come out and enjoy the festival.
