Appeals to visitors to keep dogs under control

Dundalk-Carlingford's Cllr John Reilly has expressed his concerns regarding the control of dogs on the Cooley Mountains in north Louth.

Cllr Reilly said that as the weather conditions improve over the coming months, more people will visit the Cooley mountains on walking trips of the area, and has made an appeal to people who bring dogs with them on their trip.

The Fine Gael councillor says that the local farming community are very welcoming to day trippers walking on the Cooley Mountains over the summer but adds that "If you take a dog onto the mountain, you must take responsibility to have the dog under control."

Cllr Reilly said as that "lambing time is currently in full swing, stray dogs cause enormous stress to the sheep which can lead to fatalities in the sheep lamping season."

The local councillor adds that central government are currently looking into laws regarding the control of dogs "but the best advice if you are to take a dog onto the mountain make sure it is on a lead."
