St Peters secure national success at Masters Level

Earlier this month it was the turn of the more experienced athletes to take to the track as the Athletics Ireland National Masters Indoor Championship took place at AIT Sports Complex in Athlone.

St Peters had just two athletes in action but managed to come home with a haul of three medals. Club and County secretary Tom McGrane took a break from the administration side of the sport to compete at the event and came home with a fine haul of medals.

His first event was the shot Put. Tom, who competed in the M55 category, threw a best throw of 8.61M to win the silver medal. He then followed this up by winning another silver, this time in the M55 weight for distance competition where he threw a best attempt of 5.16M.

Eamonn McAuley, who is enjoying a new lease of his sporting life having taken up athletics after a successful GAA career, was also amongst the medalists.

His hard work really paid off as he came home from the championships having run two Personal Best times. The first run was the M35 60m sprint and although finishing just outside the medals, he ran a very pleasing time of 7.73 seconds.

He then dusted himself down and ran another PB in the 200M sprint. His time of 24.95 seconds was impressive and landed him a very well deserved second place spot in what is always a high-quality field of runners.

Both athletes came home happy with their hard-earned medals and are shining examples to the St Peter’s Club Juvenile athletes, who have not been strangers to national accolades themselves over the past few seasons.
