Dundalk FC legend Joe Martin who passed away on Monday
Dundalk FC and the football community are mourning the passing of one of the club's greats, Joe Martin, who passed away on Monday at the Louth County Hospital, at the age of 91.
According to Dundalk FC, Joe made 111 league appearances for the club, scoring 58 goals, as well as making 20 FAI Cup appearances and scoring 20 goals in the competition. He began playing with the club in the 1949-50 season and made his last appearances in the 1959-60 season.
He made 212 appearances in total for the club, scoring 109 goals, was the club's leading scorer four times and is third on the all-times goals list. As well as being part of the FAI Cup winning team in the 1951-52 season, he was part of the runners up team in the Presidents Cup in the 1952-53 season. He also won one League of Ireland Cap.
The club's website says "Joe Martin’s footprints can be found all through the club’s scoring records but his starring role in the never-to-be forgotten victorious FAI Cup campaign in 1952 would itself ensure his place in the club’s Hall of Fame".
Joe was laid to rest in St Patrick's Cemetery yesterday, following his funeral mass at the Cathedral earlier that morning.
May he rest in peace.
