Joan Corrigan emerged the overall winner of the Rawson Cup stroke play competition played on Saturday April 13 and Tuesday April 16 at Dundalk Ladies Golf Club. This competition was also a Golfer of the Year and Medal qualifier.
Joan plays off 26 and had a nett score of 74. Class A was won by Ita Donnelly (8) 75nett. Runner-up was Elizabeth McGuinness (15) 75nett. Class B winner was Geraldine McGeough (23) 79nett; 2nd: Mary Carthy (21) 80nett; 3rd: Rosemary Gardiner (20) 81nett. Class B was won by Joan McAdam (36) 78nett; 2nd: Rita Kelly (31) 79nett; 3rd: Ann O’Callaghan (34) 84nett.
Congratulations to the Challenge Cup team who beat Ardee 3/2 in Baltray. The team was: Barbara McCourt, Angela Kilboy, Bernie Landy, Sheila Thompson and Joan McAdam. Team captains are Mary Connor and Anne O’Reilly. Next round is in Ashbourne on May 19.
Congratulations also to the North Leinster Mixed team who had a great win over Co Meath on home ground. Commiserations to the Junior Foursomes team who were beaten by Hollystown recently.

The 18 hole stroke competition on Saturday April 20 was won by Roseanna Crudden (18) with 74. Runner-up prize went to newcomer Aideen McGahon (34) with 74.

The season finally got off to a start on Saturday last with a trip to Rathcore Golf Club where a large number turned out, much to the delight of captain Paul Kelly.
The weather was glorious and the course, like many others was just coming out of its winter mood. This did not deflect from the competition and enjoyment had by all.
The winner was Billy Cairns who carded a magnificent 39pts off a handicap of 10. Runner-up on the day was Pat Cunningham (36pts). The category prizes went to Paul Mackle, Billie Mathews and Frankie Walshe.
Our next outing is to Trim Golf Club on May 11 and it is hoped that the turn-out shall be every bit as good.
All the winners of the men’s competition this weekend came from Saturday, bar one. Although one may argue, conditions were slightly tougher on Saturday. However, some great scores over the weekend. Well done to all the winners.

Unfortunately, this week’s ladies stroke competition was cancelled. Before anyone asks, no it was not cancelled due to Angela Gartlan’s absence. Instead, it was the result of heavy rainfall. Although, we do miss you Angela! Next week’s competition (Wednesday April 24) is the Peugeot Foursomes. Remember if you don’t have a partner organised, put your name on the time-sheet and someone could always join you.
One of our ladies was recently awarded Arnmore Alliance Player of the Year. Step forward Angela McBride and take a bow. Well done on this achievement. She follows in the footsteps of fellow Mannan Castle ladies, Mary MacNamee, Gill Rouiller and Nuala Mulholland who have won it in the past.
Our Midweek Open was only played over 13 holes due to the bad weather conditions throughout the week. However, the winning score was quite impressive from Michael Hillard (Cabra) with 32pts.
On Saturday, the ladies Intermediate team, captained by Margaret Bourke, played in Dundalk in the 1st round of the Private Homecare Championships. They were up against neighbours, Concra Wood. Mannan Castle won three out of five matches there and successfully go through to the next round. Well done to the team of Rita O’Loughlin, Mary MacNamee, Rose O’Reilly, Teresa Butler and Ann Carragher.
On Sunday, our Ulster Cup team, captained by Sean Harvey, played their 1st leg at home of their match against Dungannon Golf Club. They finished 3.5 and 3.5. Well done to all the team. With that result, it is all to play for. Best of luck to them in the next leg.
The ladies Junior Foursomes team, captained by Rita O’Loughlin, had a great win over Skerries Golf Club on Sunday. They won two out of three matches in Skerries. With a result, the Mannan Castle ladies won the overall match and are through to the next round. Well done to everyone on the team involved and best of luck in the next round.

Our Ulster Cup and Ulster Fourball teams were the first players to play over the three new finishing holes and they marked their christening with glory as both recorded victories.
The Ulster Cup team, consisting of Club captain Colin McParland, Paul Kelly, Paddy Malone, Ed Hughes, Anthony Hillen, Paul Owens and Benny Tierney have given team captain Jim McKay a 5-2 lead to take to Carnalea next Saturday for the second leg.
Nial Smyth, team captain of the Ulster Fourball, saw his charges comfortable progress to the next round against either Larne or Blackwood. Ahead 3½ to ½ from the first leg it did not stop Nial from making three changes to his team for the return leg with Peter Byrne, Frank Ryan, Seamus Keenan, Joe Hazzard, Declan O’Neill, James Coburn, Shane Muckian, Jim Conroy, Seamus McGivern and Damien Reilly doing the business with a 4½ to ½ home win.
The April Medal competition produced a hectic finale. With two inter-club games pending and the weather forecast less than promising it was decided to confine the competition to 15 holes and lessen the traffic over the new holes.
There were three players who returned a nett four under par 53 with the medal going to Daniel Hughes (9) with Barry McKeown (13) second and Seamus McParland (11) third. David Pilkington (4) was the Gross winner.
It is only fitting that the first competition for members over the new 18 holes next weekend is sponsored by Byrne Monumental, Crossmaglen.
Our annual first competition of the year since the clubs foundation has been sponsored by this long established family business and the array of prizes already on display in the clubhouse are worthy of a Captains Day spread. No doubt with the new holes in play there will be packed time-sheets for Saturday and Sunday.
