CAPTAIN Gerry Matthews and Lady Captain Vera Kelly arrived for their Captains Drive-In at Mannan Castle by boat, greeted by a large crowd of well-wishers, friends and family.

The crowd were definitely amused by the captains’ aquatic mode of transport and every member thankful that the boat was pulled by a car driven by Richie McGeough.

If they had arrived last week they probably would have needed a boat to play some of our holes. Everyone who played this weekend were full of compliments about how dry the course was just a week after the uninvited waters from Lough Moylan flooded the course.

Thankfully there is very little evidence of the flood and all 18 holes are open and totally dry again, thanks to the hard work of our grounds/green keepers Paddy, Patsy and Pat who did tremendous work repairing damage done to the path beside the 5th green with the help of a band of volunteers Jude Garvey, Jack Branigan, Ciaran Maloney, Dick Bourke, John Rouiller, Eddie Rouiller, Tommy Hoey, Jimmy McCahey and John O’Flaherty.

Our course was built by volunteers and it was great to see that spirit of volunteerism is still at work in our club. On behalf of all the members I would like to wish captains Gerry and Vera the best of luck for the coming season.

It was great to see so many members come out to play on such a cold weekend to support our captains. The format is one that most golfers love, as there’s no pressure in a scramble. This weekend there was a draw, so every team was mixed making it a great way to get to know other members, both young and old, some members even played both days.

I may have jokingly called the winning team a bunch of bandits, when I heard there score Sunday afternoon, but truth be told they are a good team of golfers who individually week after week support the club by playing in the weekend competitions and I’m absolutely thrilled they won.

Winners of the Drive-In: Vincent Duffy, Tommy Burke, Ronald McArdle and Barry McGuire.

There was a great turnout for last week’s Ladies 13 Hole competition held on Wednesday February 20. Conditions were perfect and the course is in spectacular conditions. Only one more 13 hole competition before the 18 holes start on March 6.

Results of the 13 Hole Competition held on Wednesday March 20 - 1st: Margaret Bourke (28) 29pts (on the countback); 2nd: Nuala Mulholland (22) 29pts; 3rd: Bridie Fitzmaurice (23) 28pts.

The draw for the first round of the 2013 Women’s Irish Mail All-Ireland Foursomes competition has been completed. We have been drawn to play at home against neighbouring Nuremore Golf Club. Good luck to Rita O’Loughlin and Teresa Butler who will be representing Mannan Ladies.
