Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald with TD Ruairí Ó Murchú and councillors Joanna Byrne and Antóin Watters at the launch in Drogheda
Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald was in Drogheda last night to launch the party’s three Louth candidates.
At her last engagement of the day, the party leader was joined by candidates - sitting TD Ruairí Ó Murchú and councillors Joanna Byrne and Antóin Watters - at the event at the Marcy Hotel, where there was standing room only.
The event was also attended by Dáire Hughes, Sinn Féin MP and retiring Drogheda TD Imelda Munster.
Louth director of elections, Cathal Donnelly, introduced the candidates and there were previews shown of the trio’s social media videos.
In his speech, Deputy Ó Murchú said the party was ready for government and urged activists to continue to be involved in the election campaign in Louth for the next two weeks.
Cllr. Antóin Watters, who was added to the Sinn Féin ticket on November 1, said he wanted to stand in the general election so that his children would have a better future than his three brothers, who had to emigrate.
In her address, Cllr. Joanna Byrne said she wanted to continue the work of her predecessor Imelda Munster and vowed, if elected, to bring the energy and commitment she has at Louth County Council level to the Dáil.
Deputy McDonald received warm applause and cheers when she referenced the "remarkable achievement" of Drogheda United, who, 48 hours before, had won the FAI Cup.
She acknowledged Cllr. Byrne’s role at the club as the first female chairperson of a League of Ireland outfit.
Deputy McDonald said Sinn Féin is ready for government and outlined the party’s policies on housing, health, €10 a day childcare, abolition of the USC for those earning under €45,000 a year.
She said the election is "the most important of a generation".
A presentation was made on behalf of Louth Comhairle Ceantair to Imelda Munster to mark her retirement.
