St. Kevins earned themselves a place in the 2012 Senior Championship Final in a match that failed to produce any of the expected excitement and drama.

It wasn’t by any means a perfect performance by either side but the Philipstown girls just about did enough to claim the 3 point victory.

From the throw in St. Kevin’s took control at centre field, were quicker to the ball and delivered a more than adequate supply of ball to their forwards who failed to turn procession into scores.

However, when St. Anne’s conceded a close in free, it was Nicola Carter who registered the first score of the match with a well taken point.

Carter who was having a very industrious game scored a second point from another free within minutes.

St. Kevin’s continued to launch attacks on the Togher defence but was consistently denied by a highly impressive defence that worked tirelessly throughout.

At the opposite end of the park the Togher forwards were moving with lack of intent, however when Stephanie Shearman latched on to a ball from Linda Woods, she somehow navigated her way towards the Kevin’s goal and miraculously found the back of the net which gave the Togher girls a one point lead going into the interval.

The second half resumed in much the same manner as the first half. Neither team were giving a convincing performance, St. Kevin’s continued to dominate at centre field particularly Nicola Carter, while St. Anne’s goalkeeper Leanne Sharkey gave her usual display of coolness and kept a clean sheet.

The Togher defence particularly Linda Woods. Catriona Cantwell and Martina Crehan continued to close ranks and make life very difficult for their opponents.

St. Kevin’s piled on intense pressure in the final 15 minutes and were awarded two frees which were converted by Donna King to give them a one point advantage.

King who was having a quiet match by her standards started an onslaught and fired over three points within minutes leaving St. Anne’s trailing by four points.

St. Anne’s did show a flicker of purpose in the final minutes resulting in a point from Siobhan Dawdry, but this was not enough to rain on St. Kevin’s parade.
