Gareth Culligan has been named Farming for Nature’s August Ambassador

A Castlebellingham farmer who has spent more than two decades putting soil health and biodiversity at the centre of his farming practices has been named Farming for Nature’s August Ambassador.

Gareth Culligan, who farms 242 hectares in Louth, is being recognised for his pioneering work in conservation agriculture and his commitment to showing how productive tillage farming can work alongside nature.

A third-generation farmer, Gareth manages 100 hectares of owned land and a further 142 hectares of leased ground, producing arable crops using a system built around soil-friendly practices. His journey began with minimum tillage before progressing to a full no-till approach, with the health of the soil now guiding every decision made on the farm.

Through no-till cultivation, diverse crop rotations and the use of cover crops, Gareth has improved soil structure, reduced erosion, helped retain carbon and lowered the farm’s reliance on external inputs.

His farming system also includes companion cropping, reduced pesticide, herbicide and fertiliser use, the complete removal of insecticides, and a more targeted approach to crop nutrition and protection. These measures have demonstrated that environmentally conscious farming methods can also deliver productive and profitable results.

The farm now provides a home for a wide range of species, including owls, buzzards, pollinating insects and even otters along the river bordering the holding.

A founding member and former Chair of BASE Ireland, Gareth is passionate about sharing his knowledge with fellow farmers. Through farm walks, discussion groups and demonstrations, he continues to inspire others to adopt farming practices that improve soil health, strengthen biodiversity and build resilient farm businesses.

As August Ambassador, Gareth will share his experience, practical insights and passion for conservation agriculture, highlighting how healthy soils, thriving wildlife and productive farming can all flourish together.
