Plans to transform the derelict Meadow Grove pumping station in Dundalk move forward

Plans to give Dundalk’s iconic Merryweather fire engine a permanent home have moved a step closer, with Louth County Council inviting members of the public to make submissions on proposals to redevelop the old pumping station at Meadow Grove.

The Part 8 planning application proposes the change of use of the existing derelict pumping station into a purpose-built display building and museum.

The project has been welcomed by Cllr Robert Nash, who has been campaigning for a permanent home for the historic Merryweather alongside the Old Dundalk Society and retired firefighter Jim Kerley.

Cllr Nash said he has long believed the Merryweather could play a greater role in Dundalk’s heritage and tourism offering.

“I have been a long time advocating for a permanent home for the Iconic Merryweather as I always felt that it was not reaching its full potential and could be a huge tourist attraction for our town,” he said.

He also suggested that the attraction could be incorporated into Dundalk’s established walking tours, providing visitors with an opportunity to learn more about the town’s firefighting and industrial heritage.

Welcoming the progression of the project, Cllr Nash thanked Louth County Council staff who have been working on the proposals.

“I am delighted to see this project move a step closer,” he said, adding that he looked forward to seeing “some real progress in the next few months”.

He described the proposed building as one that would be “truly fitting for one of Dundalk town’s most valuable pieces of history”.

Members of the public are now being invited to view the proposals and make submissions as part of the Part 8 process.

The closing date for submissions is 5pm on Tuesday, October 27.

Further information on the proposal and details on how to make a submission are available through consult.Louth.ie.
