Louth TD Ruairí Ó Murchú said the workers were told via an online meeting

Job losses at PayPal revealed this morning have been described as ‘deeply worrying’ by Louth TD Ruairí Ó Murchú.

It is understood that one manager, three team leaders and 29 senior agents positions in business support were being made redundant out of a workforce of around 120 in that department.

The workers were told via an online meeting after receiving an email invitation this morning. It was not immediately clear which exact positions are under threat.

Deputy Ó Murchú said he had been contacted by concerned workers this (Monday) morning and said the news was ‘deeply worrying’ as it is not clear whether the jobs are being transferred overseas, are being eliminated completely or are being replaced by AI.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: “It is a terrible blow for the workers and their families, particularly at the start of the new school year. I have contacted PayPal directly about it.

“There is a 30-day period of consultation starting shortly but what is not clear is whether these workers’ jobs are being cut, moved overseas or being replaced by AI, which is a growing concern in fintech businesses like PayPal.

“The announcement today comes on the back of a volatile time for PayPal workers where it was revealed that Stripe abandoned a reported $50 billion offer last week. The company replaced their CEO in March.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: “It is vital that PayPal fully consults with their staff in a meaningful way and puts in place the help and supports that it has promised for those who are affected.

“All the arms of the State should be used to support those who are losing their jobs to find alternative employment and be assisted through this very difficult time.

“The government must ensure that there is a ‘skills audit’ carried out on those who are being made redundant to ensure that their transition into other suitable employment is as seamless as possible.

“This is not the first time that these loyal and hard-working employees have faced the uncertainty of a round of job losses and PayPal has to ensure that they are treated fairly and compassionately through this process and that the company moves quickly to clarify their short and long term plans in Ireland”.
