Dundalk’s Cú Chulainn’s Castle has been recognised as a “Hidden Gem” on a new interactive world map documenting significant castles and fortresses around the globe.

The castles selected for the map are based on online sources, Wikipedia, academic papers, archaeological journals, Wikimedia Commons - and not every castle makes the grade. Castle Map documents and curates significant castles of the world, including castles in France, Spain, India, China, UK, Ireland and even fortresses in Australia.

Recently, Dundalk’s Save Cu Chulainn Castle & Surrounding landscape campaign, which was set up to protest against a proposal to build on 98 acres adjacent to the castle, has been contacted by the founder of this interactive service, and told that Cu Chulainn’s Castle was to be included on the world map, describing it on the interactive map as a “Hidden Gem”.

He went on to say:

"As the creator of [thecastlemap.com] I am opposed to the housing development beside Cú Chulainn's Castle in Dundalk, Co. Louth. The reason why I created Castle Map is because I wanted to showcase the uniqueness of all castles around the world. One of my favorite countries when it comes to the history of castles is Ireland.

“Ireland as a country has a very unique history, and precisely because that history has been threatened a lot in the past, I believe it is extremely important that it be better cared for today. A development of this kind would put the castle's integrity as a historical site at risk. This kind of development also threatens Irish heritage."
