A 34 year old motorcyclist who Dundalk district court had previously been told had tried to avoid a collision with a van, but the throttle was unresponsive, was fined and disqualified from driving last week.

Conor Gaynor with an address at Plaster, Mountpleasant, Dundalk was prosecuted for dangerous driving and driving without insurance on the Racecourse Road Dundalk on March 22nd last year.

An earlier sitting of the court had heard he had been travelling at high speed when he collided with a navy Ford Connect.

The Defence solicitor said his client's motorbike had been examined and there was nothing wrong found.

He added that Mr. Gaynor had suffered significant injuries including to his pelvis and a fractured ankle and submitted that there were no aggravating circumstances.

The defendant who also addressed the court explained " The van stopped between two lanes of traffic".

Judge Eirinn McKiernan adjourned the case to last Wednesday to enable the defendant to complete a pro-social driving course in Letterkenny, and said she would reduce it to careless driving if a certificate of completion was produced on the next court date.

However, last Wednesday after the Defence solicitor explained that his client had been not in a position to pay for the course, Judge McKiernan fined him €200 and disqualified him from driving for two years.
