Tuesday last saw Round 4 of the Cuchulainn Mountain Bike League being contested on the open mountain.
The course comprised of 8.2km of open mountain racing, covering all terrain types, climbs and technical descents.
The fantastic weather that we’ve been enjoying over the previous week had ensured that the mountain was dry, and dare I say dusty.
19 riders, including Dr Maeve Baxter, the Irish Downhill champion, signed up for the 7pm start on the first of many open mountain type races.
The night’s racing proved to be not only technically challenging but extremely competitive with a lot of the riders with the bigger handicaps making up the times and coming through the field within the final 1.5km with only the steep climb up and technical descent down the locally known ‘white knuckle ride’ to the finish line left to negotiate.
Unfortunately some of our riders in the heat of the battle, failed to notice the directions and found themselves ‘off the reservation’, much to the amusement of the rest of the riders.
The week’s post mortem and tall tails were shared at the Lumpers Bar over a draught high five. The craic was great and the ninja midges were out in droves.
Results of Round 4 are as follows - 1st: Maeve Baxter; 2nd: Sandra O’Hagan; 3rd: Michael Wilson; Fastest rider: Gary Sheils in 28 minutes 18 seconds.
Round 5 will be on Tuesday June 11 at 7pm. All visiting club riders and guests are welcome to compete as long as they hold a current 2013 Cycling Ireland License.
