A Garda established a 34-year-old disqualified driver had given a false surname and date of birth when he searched the vehicle after getting a strong smell of cannabis coming from it.

Judge Nicola Andrews heard Obasanjo Olajubu of Beacon Court, Coe's Road, Dundalk was detected driving at an excessive speed at Aghaboys, Dundalk on January 17th last by a member of the Roads Policing Unit.

The garda said he got a smell of cannabis coming from the vehicle and found documents confirming his identity when it was searched.

The court was also told that following a check of a Nissan Qashquai that the defendant was driving on the Inner Relief Road on May 9th last and it was confirmed there was no valid insurance cover in place and he was subsequently stopped.

The investigating garda on that occasion knew that he was a disqualified driving at the time and he was arrested.

That four year disqualification was imposed last December for an offence in April 2024.

The Defence barrister said his client works as a barber and described his behaviour as totally unacceptable and asked the court to consider allowing Mr Olajubu the chance to engage with the Probation Service with a view to be assessed for community service.

However, Judge Andrews replied "He's been given lots of opportunities. He is manifestly unfit to be on the roads".

The judge imposed a four month sentence for the Aghaboys insurance offence along with a six year driving ban.

The rest of the matters were taken into consideration.

Judge Andrews fixed recognizance in the event of an appeal on his own bond of €1,000 with a €1,000 cash lodgement.
