Dundalk courthouse
A 21-year-old man who was found with open bottles of Carlsberg in the central console of his car, when it was flagged as having no active motor insurance in place, was fined €1,000 at Dundalk District Court last week for drink driving.
Narcis Ilade of Emer Terrace, Castletown Road, Dundalk had contested the charge, which followed the detection on Clanbrassil Street, Dundalk on November 9th last year.
A member of the Roads Policing Unit gave evidence that as he was informing the defendant that the Mazda 5 was being seized as a result of having no insurance, he detected a strong smell of alcohol from him and saw the open beer bottles in the centre console.
The court heard how the defendant had failed a roadside breath test and gave a specimen above the legal limit when he was brought to Dundalk Garda Station and underwent a test using the Evidenzer machine.

Mr Ilade subsequently produced his insurance cover and the court heard he had no previous convictions.
In addition to the fine, Judge Nicola Andrews imposed a two year disqualification.
