Dundalk Courthouse
A man who smashed a car windscreen and caused €100 worth of damage to a hotel room, where he was staying with a social worker as a troubled teen, has been given a one month sentence at Dundalk district court.
The court, which sat in camera, heard the defendant had been placed in foster care following the death of his parents.
The now 20 year old defendant pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal damage at the Fairways Hotel on August 7th 2022.
The court heard he had 62 previous convictions.
The Defence barrister said his client had been staying at the hotel and outlined how he had a difficult background with his mother who had a drug addiction, dying when he was seven years old and his father, who he had no contact with, dying shortly afterwards.
He added the defendant was in the hotel room on his own and felt isolated and bored - and hit the wall a number of times breaking a lamp before he climbed out a window and threw a rock at the back window of the car.
Judge Stephanie Coggans imposed a one month sentence, backdated to October1st for the criminal damage to the car and marked the second count taken into consideration.
