The senior quiz team of St Francis National School Blackrock will be competing in the national final of the Credit Union Quiz at the RDS Dublin on 19th April.
The team came first in the local competition organised by Connect Credit Union, held at The Fairways hotel in Dundalk in February. They progressed to the Chapter Credit Union (Regional) stage of the competition held at Threemilehouse, Monaghan last weekend. Following this exciting regional final, St Francis NS emerged as overall winners on the day, securing qualification for the national final in April.
The four pupil team includes Gerard Lynn, Seth Connolly, Fintan Birmingham and Sebastian Blossom Palimattam Roland and they were accompanied to the event by their families and their teacher, Mr David Sheppard, who coaches the St Francis Quiz Team.
Speaking after the event, Mr Sheppard congratulated all participating schools and praised the dedication of the pupils along with the support of their parents. He also highlighted the value of the quiz in encouraging learning, confidence and collaboration among young people in a fun and engaging environment.
“As a school we have a cohort of twelve pupils on our various quiz teams and they get together once a week at lunchtime for quiz practice. Over the past two years, in particular, the various teams have enjoyed several successes but this is the first time a team from St Francis NS has made it to the national final of the Credit Union quiz. We commend all these pupils for supporting and encouraging each other”.
Norman McDonnell, CEO of Connect Credit Union, said:

“Having hosted the local stage of the Credit Union Quiz with schools from across the county, it’s fantastic to see St Francis NS go all the way through to the national final. We’re very proud to see them representing our community and wish them the very best of luck in the RDS.”
Over 25,000 students from schools across the island participate in local and regional rounds of the Credit Union Quiz. It is anticipated that the final next month will include 90 qualifying school quiz teams.
