It was quality rather than quantity that Blackrock AC sent into combat over the June Bank Holiday as just two girls’ squads headed to Celbridge for the Athletics Leinster Track and Field Juvenile Teams Championships.
Gold was won by the super U10 team of Aoife O’Brien, Eve Brosnan, Caoilfhionn McCarthy, Aoibhin McMahon and Neasa Reilly who retained the title they won a year ago.
The rules saw the girls compete in varying pairs in four different events, and also run a relay. Remarkably, the Blackrock girls managed to win three of the four pairs events against the best that Leinster could produce: Ball Throw, 60m and 600m.
They were also very competitive in the Long Jump. Their outstanding performance of the day had yet to come.
In the final event, the 4x100m relay, they dropped the baton. But these girls were Leinster relay champions only the week before with good reason. They stopped, retrieved the baton, took off in hot pursuit, sluiced their way through the field and took a worthy second place.
The girls now travel to Tullamore on June 17 for the Leinster Pairs competition, and to Cork on June 23 to stake their claim to be All-Ireland relay champions.
Blackrock’s U13 girls followed up their younger counterparts with aplomb.
The quartet of Clodagh Roe, Gemma McCrave, Grace Brosnan and Shauna McMahon did not take the Gold on this occasion, but won a very proud overall Silver.
Clodagh and Gemma were outstanding in the 60m hurdles taking first and second places to win that event easily.
To round off a fine day the girls raced to a fantastic win in the relay event, accounting handsomely for some of the teams who had beaten them into fourth place in the previous week’s Leinster Championships.
These girls now look forward to being joined by their club counterparts for Leinster individual events Championships later in the month.
