Louth County Council was recently awarded Best Green Sustainable Initiative at the Community and Council Awards, organised by the Local Authority Members Association (LAMA).
The award specifically celebrates the success of the Ardee Garden Care & Repair Programme, a community-driven initiative launched as a pilot scheme in 2024 with the financial backing of Ardee Municipal District Councillors.
A spokesperson for the Council said: “This innovative programme provides a free gardening service to older and vulnerable residents in Ardee, helping to improve their wellbeing through the maintenance of accessible, safe, and welcoming outdoor spaces.
“This recognition highlights Louth County Council’s longstanding commitment to fostering an age-friendly society in County Louth.
“As the first county in Ireland to gain age-friendly accreditation from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2008, Louth has consistently led the way in embedding age-friendly principles across its services.

“The initiative reflects the power of community collaboration, bringing together Louth County Council, Ardee Tidy Towns, An Garda Síochána, Dee Hub, and Age Friendly Louth. This partnership not only enhances the environment but also strengthens community ties, ensuring that older residents feel supported and valued.
“Louth County Council remains committed to leading by example in promoting age-friendly practices and sustainable community initiatives, continually striving to improve the quality of life for all residents.”
Cathaoirleach of Ardee Municipal District, Cllr John Sheridan, commented on the achievement, saying: “This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all those involved in making County Louth a leader in age-friendly and sustainable initiatives. The Ardee Garden Care & Repair Programme is a shining example of how community partnerships can make a real difference in people’s lives.”
