Ancient legends will light Up Drogheda with the Lú Festival of Light set to return this month

Drogheda’s historic streets will come alive with light, sound and ancient Irish legends from October 23rd to October 26th as the Lú Festival of Light returns for its fifth year.
The Lú Festival of Light is set to return on October 23rd in a display that transforms the town’s landmark buildings into giant storytelling canvases.
The festival is inspired by the Celtic Calendar, the changing seasons and the traditions of harvest and Samhain, this year’s festival invites audiences into a world of heroes, powerful gods and epic battles.
Stories at the festival will include Lugh’s legendary clash with Balor, the Dagda and his magical Cauldron of Plenty, and Brigid, whose story connects Ireland’s ancient mythology with its enduring traditions.
Trevor Connolly, Chief Executive of Love Drogheda BID, said: “Lú is about seeing Drogheda in a whole new light with our theme of the Celtic Calendar and the aspects of ancient Ireland.
“For four nights, our historic buildings become the canvass and our streets fill with families, music and entertainment. Reaching our fifth year is a proud milestone, made possible by our funders, creative partners, businesses and community.
“We encourage visitors to come early, explore the town, browse the shops and enjoy a meal before the lights come on. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience Drogheda’s creativity and heritage while supporting the local businesses that help make the festival so special.”
Visual Spectrum leads the festival’s technical and creative production.
Ryan Vail of Visual Spectrum said:“Designing the visual and audio narrative for the Lú Festival of Light involves balancing cutting-edge projection technology with the historical canvas of Drogheda’s buildings.”
The main projection locations are St Peter’s Church on West Street, Old Abbey, St Laurence’s Gate, the Methodist Church, Highlanes Gallery and Scotch Hall Shopping Centre.
The popular Cottage Market also returns to the Dominican Church on Dominic Street, bringing together local crafters, makers and artisan food traders.
Cllr Declan Power, Mayor of the Borough District of Drogheda, said: "The Lú Festival of Light has become one of the highlights of Drogheda's cultural calendar, drawing families, visitors and our local community together in a truly unique celebration of heritage and creativity.
“It is wonderful to see our historic landmarks transformed through light and storytelling, bringing ancient legends to life in the heart of our town.
