Ardee Concert Band took part in the Irish Association of Brass and Concert Band national competitions at the Solstice Arts Centre in Navan recently.

The senior band took part in section one for the first time in seven years under the baton of Brendan Breslin. The programme began with the band playing their own choice piece first entitled, Samurai by Nigel Clarke, a work of extremes for which they received 47 marks out of 50 for this piece.

Next for their test piece, Gallimaufry by Guy Woolfenden, a piece written for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s productions of the Henry IV plays which opened in London in 1982, they got 96 marks out of 100.

So they received a total mark of 144 out of a possible 150.

Rathfarnham Concert Band fell by two points behind Ardee with 142 points out of 150. Dublin Concert Band took first prize in section one with a mark of 146/150.

Ardee also took home the prize for the Best Supporting section for their percussion section.

Congratulations also go out John Gaynor and the Youth Band who played a very tough competitive section but this year they were just “Pipped at the post” with Clara Town Band claiming the title for section four. They are a credit to themselves and their families and its onwards and upwards for these budding musicians and in the words of John Doyle, the adjudicator, they are a confident band with a well balanced sound in all three pieces they performed.

It was a long but very rewarding weekend for all, young and old.

A day that will be remembered for years to come.

For anyone attending this event it was a wonderful day’s music.

The art of concert band musicianship is very much alive and well in the hands of Ireland’s next generation.

There are no worries that it will die out.

Indeed it has long been a great tradition in the town of Ardee.

And all indications are it will continue.

All credit goes to the executive committee of the Irish Association of Brass and Concert bands who did a wonderful job, ably assisted by the staff of the Solstice Arts Centre Navan.
