Glenmuir overturn Corduff United
Glenmuir FC Under 11
Glenmuir United advanced to the last 16 of the U11 Menton Seery National Cup after a deserved victory against a very well organised Corduff FC team in Dublin two weeks ago.
In very wet conditions, Glenmuir played the better football throughout though had to rely on some resolute defending to get the result they needed.
The away team were first to break the deadlock when good work by Luke Murray, Kyle Rafferty, Jamie Browne and Kian Newell resulted in the latter being taken down on the edge of the Corduff box. Jamie Browne stepped up for the free kick which he powerfully steered in the top corner of the Corduff net leaving the keeper no chance.
Not long after this Glenmuir were 2-0 up when a great ball from the back by Conor McGowan fed Reese O’Hanlon who in turn flicked on to Kian Newell.The Glenmuir striker raced in on goal and placed the ball in the bottom corner to the away team’s delight.
Corduff were however to get a goal back just before the break when the Glens failed to deal with a corner and a the home side’s striker drove in at the far post to make it 2-1.
The second half opened brightly with Glenmuir being awarded a penalty after Kian Newell was again fouled in the box. The Glens striker was however to see his resulting strike excellently saved by the home keeper but Kyle Rafferty was on hand to finish the rebound and make it 3-1.
For their heroic exploits Glenmuir have been awarded a home tie against Killarney Celtic from Kerry on the week ending February 26 at Glenmuir Park.
