LOCAL duo David O’Donnell and Mary Marcus were part of the Team Ireland panel that starred at the recent 9th Scottish International Open Karate Championships which was held in Edinburgh on April 27-28

Both fighters, who represent Ireland Wadokai Karate-Do Remnei which is located in Blackrock, Reaghstown and the Bay Estate School, performed brilliantly in their categories.

The event saw not only teams from as far away as Malta, Sweden, Denmark, and France, but a large number of clubs attending from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Mary, originally from Blackrock but now living in Dundalk, was the only female member of the team to come home with two medals. Mary came 3rd in Individual Kata (form) and 3rd in Individual Kumite (fighting).

Sensei Tommy Marrett was beaming with joy at this huge achievement, as it is the first time that both Mary and fellow Dundalk man David have competed in the Scottish International Open, and it is also the first time that members of Ireland Wadokai Karate-Do Remnei (IWKR) have competed in this huge international event.

Mary only joined IWKR in 2006 and to date not only does she compete nationally and internationally, but is to date the first female within Ireland to be awarded a 1st Dan from the Federation of Wado-Kai Europe.

With training so intense over the past few months in preparation for Scotland, Mary and David have now set their eyes towards the Annual Chase International Karate Competition in Birmingham on May 12.

They will both be joined by fellow members of Team Ireland from within the Ireland Karate Federation Commission and they all look forward to more challenges in both Individual Kata, Pair Kata, Kumite and the grand finale of the International Team Kumite Event where Team Ireland will compete against Team England, and if last year’s Team Kumite Event was anything to go by, this year’s event is due to be even more exciting.
